What is an Annual Wellness Visit?

It’s a conversation about your health and preventative routine care. It is not a physical or a routine checkup. AWV Visits are typically fully covered for Medicare members at no cost. Men and women will have slightly different routine screenings. Learn about the differences and list of screenings that could work for you.

Many of the biggest threats to men’s health are preventable and you can start taking better care of your health today. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the top causes of death among men in the United States are heart disease, cancer, accidents and unintentional injuries, respiratory disease and stroke.

WOMEN

A lot of major health diseases are preventable According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the top causes of death among women in the U.S. include heart disease, stroke, cancer, respiratory disease and Alzheimer’s disease.1 Women are also at an increased risk of developing arthritis, osteoporosis and depression.2 Some health issues that affect men and women can affect women differently.

Annual Wellness Visit versus Routine Physical

Routine Checkup/Physical

A thorough physical hands on examination covers head to toe and usually lasts about 30 minutes.

Evaluates your body using observation, palpitation, percussion, and auscultation.

Your doctor will palpitate, touch and feeling for unusual lumps, check organ size and shape, and check responses.

An exam taking one hand over your abdomen to identify blockages, and pinpoint any problem areas.

Reflexes are checked with the use of a small rubber hammer.

    • Any information you have on recent visits with your specialists

  • When you first join Medicare, you can typically have a “Welcome Medicare” preventive visit within the first 12 months. After that, you can have one wellness visit per calendar year. There’s no additional cost for

    this visit.

    If possible, it’s a good idea to schedule your first wellness visit early in

    the year so you can get started right away on the plan you and your

    doctor create.
