Utilizing Multiple Disciplines to Treat Chronic Pain

According to the National Academy of Medicine, approximately 100 million adults in the United States suffer chronic pain. Pain management is a medical specialty that takes a multidisciplinary approach to treat various types of chronic pain.

The pain management department within South Carolina & Georgia House Calls (SC & GA HC) comprises the husband-and-wife team of Doctor Merritt Tolan and Doctor Christopher Rubel, who have a combined 60+ years of experience in the medical profession. The specialty includes pharmacists, behavior specialists, orthopedic specialists, and primary care providers. Through telehealth and in-person visits, the pain management team achieves a high level of care continuity for its patients.

In addition to chronic pain, many patients also suffer psychological issues associated with their pain. Patients who gain an understanding through behavioral therapy can manage the emotions and anxieties accompanying their discomfort, allowing them to cope with their pain more effectively. SC & GA HC utilizes referrals to behavior specialists and pain management therapies in treating the complete patient.

A patient seeking pain management through the specialty must already be under the care of an SC & GA HC provider. The initial appointment consists of an in-person screening that includes a drug test. After the initial screening, the patient receives their first appointment via telehealth within ten days of the screening.
